Be Well with BEWL—Beth El Women’s League
September Message from BEWL President Joan Sitver
“Eternal G-d, as the twilight of the old year fades into the night that marks the birth of a new year, we gather with mingled emotions, mindful of life’s blessings and sorrows.” This phrase from the New Mahzor, helps to put us in a spiritual frame of mind as we approach the High Holidays of Rosh HaShonah and Yom Kippur. We are reminded of the highlights of the year past, the highs as well as the lows. We want to enhance events we enjoyed and to plan for new events to meet the needs of our members.
We remember the BEWL events we so enjoyed: our Tea Party at the home of Evelyn & Leon Zeitzer, the Torah Fund Shabbat chaired by Eileen Bloom & Rose Hirsch, the Women’s League Shabbat chaired by Judy Zola, the two Lunch & Game Days guided by Bonnie Kluger, and the talk on Israel presented by Anne Zaslow. We presented candlesticks and wine cups to our Bar and Bat Mitvah students, honored Kathy Miller for her years of service, and continue to give needed items to Sojourner, a women’s shelter in Phoenix.
We are currently setting up our future calendar:
- Marcia Fine’s book talk on, The Hidden Ones, a historical novel, about the Spanish Inquisition which took place in Mexico. This event is scheduled for Sunday, September 15 at 12 noon at Beth El. Men, as well as women, are encouraged to attend. No admission charge. Do RSVP to Alicia Moskowitz.
- Meet and Greet Our New Rabbi and Sisters for our Annual Paid-up Dinner on Tuesday, October 29 at 6:30 pm. There is no charge for paid-up BEWL members (dues are $36 payable to BEWL).
- Pink Shabbat, November 2 to learn more about breast cancer awareness from the oncologist, Dr. Emily Grade, chaired by Judy Zola.
- Torah Fund Shabbat, January 18, 2020, when we learn more about the Jewish Theological Seminary, which Torah Fund supports. This is chaired by Eileen Bloom.
As we approach the Days of Awe, let us give more meaning to our lives, by enjoying the words of the High Holiday prayer book, “May our prayers arouse within us lofty resolves and help us to give richer meaning to our daily lives.”
