Joanie Charnow – Preschool Director
Joanie Charnow has lived in Arizona since she was 10 months old. Her family joined Beth El Congregation when she was 4 years old, and she grew up in our Hebrew School. Joanie graduated from Prescott College with a degree in Early Childhood Education. Teaching is her passion, and she started her teaching career in 1976. Joanie came back to Beth El as a Pre-K teacher for 8 years in the 1990’s before moving on to be the Director of Early Childhood Education at the Valley of the Sun’s Jewish Community Center’s Preschool in Scottsdale. Joanie has come full circle, and is now back here at Beth El’s Early Childhood Center. She lives in Scottsdale and has one daughter and two grandchildren who all live in Tucson.
Ros Slovin – Office Administrator
Ros is originally from South Africa and attended the University of Cape Town. She has lived with her family in Phoenix for the past 27 years– 25 of them working at Beth El! The first three years of her career at Beth El she worked in the Youth Department and then transferred to the Preschool where she has remained for the past 16 years. She adores the children and feels very fortunate to be around them all day every day. Ros loves spending time with her baby grandson, enjoys reading, and is a regular visitor to the library.
Infants Room Teachers
Daisy was born in Mexicali B.C. and has 17 years of experience working in education. In Mexicali Daisy taught Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade.
Daisy has 14 years of experience working at the Beth El Early Childhood Center where she has worked with the Ones, Toddlers, 2’s and Pre-K classes. She is currently the lead teacher in the Infant room.
Daisy has been married to her husband, Alberto, for 17 years and they have 4 beautiful children – Valery (14), Alberto (12), Angel (11) and Genesis (4).
Daisy loves to paint in her free time and enjoys going to her children’s soccer and football games. She considers her children to be her life.
Gladys Florian was born and raised in Guatemala. She graduated as an elementary school teacher and moved to Los Angeles 34 years ago. She married her husband Jorge and they have two boys, George and Michael. They moved to Phoenix 17 years ago and Gladys worked at the JCC Early Childhood Center for 14 years with the Ones/Toddler group. She is now doing the same at the Beth El Early Childhood Center. She enjoys being around children and watching them grow.
Dvora moved to Arizona 20 years ago with her family from Israel. She has 3 children ages 23, 21 and 19. Dvora served in the Israeli army for two and a half years. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education from the David Yalin Teachers College in Jerusalem.
Dvora worked for 15 years in Israel, teaching autistic, special needs and hard of hearing children with learning disabilities. After moving to the US she worked at the Chanen preschool for 19 years before coming to the Beth El Early Childhood Center last year.
Nora is a very familiar face at Beth El – she has been teaching at the Beth El Early Childhood Center since1989. For the past few years she has been teaching Pre-K.
She is a native of Argentina who has also lived in Israel and New York before coming to the Valley. In Israel she studied at Machon Greenberg and Jerusalem University. She actively pursues educational opportunities through NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) and CAJE (Coalition for Alternatives in Jewish Education). She acquired her AA degree in early childhood education at Phoenix College.
Nora is very interested in the Reggio Emilia and Writing Without Tears programs, both of which she brings into the classroom.
Nora is the mother of twin daughters and a son who attended our school. She also has a grandson whom she adores.
In her spare time, Nora likes to Zumba, garden organically, travel and look after her animals.
