Joanie Charnow – Preschool Director
Joanie Charnow has lived in Arizona since she was 10 months old. Her family joined Beth El Congregation when she was 4 years old, and she grew up in our Hebrew School. Joanie graduated from Prescott College with a degree in Early Childhood Education. Teaching is her passion, and she started her teaching career in 1976. Joanie came back to Beth El as a Pre-K teacher for 8 years in the 1990’s before moving on to be the Director of Early Childhood Education at the Valley of the Sun’s Jewish Community Center’s Preschool in Scottsdale. Joanie has come full circle, and is now back here at Beth El’s Early Childhood Center. She lives in Scottsdale and has one daughter and two grandchildren who all live in Tucson.
Ros Slovin – Office Administrator
Ros is originally from South Africa and attended the University of Cape Town. She has lived with her family in Phoenix for the past 22 years– 19 of them working at Beth El! The first three years of her career at Beth El she worked in the Youth Department and then transferred to the Preschool where she has remained for the past 16 years. She adores the children and feels very fortunate to be around them all day every day. Ros loves spending time with her baby grandson, enjoys reading, and is a regular visitor to the library.
Infants Room Teachers
Daisy was born in Mexicali B.C. and has 17 years of experience working in education. In Mexicali Daisy taught Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade.
Daisy has 14 years of experience working at the Beth El Early Childhood Center where she has worked with the Ones, Toddlers, 2’s and Pre-K classes. She is currently the lead teacher in the Infant room.
Daisy has been married to her husband, Alberto, for 17 years and they have 4 beautiful children – Valery (14), Alberto (12), Angel (11) and Genesis (4).
Daisy loves to paint in her free time and enjoys going to her children’s soccer and football games. She considers her children to be her life.
Crystal is one of the teachers in the Infant Room. She is 28 years old and was born and raised in Glendale, Arizona. She is currently going to school to further her education in early childhood learning and development.
Crystal is the mother of 3 children.
Irma “Patty” Tercero
Patty works in the Infant Room in the Beth El Early Childhood Center. She loves working with children and from 2003 – 2008 she worked at the Valley of the Sun JCC in the toddler room. In 2008 Irma moved to California where she worked with children with special needs for 9 years. It was an experience that she loved.
Irma has 6 children and 20 grandchildren. She loves her family and loves to help others.
Irma is extremely grateful to the director, Joanie, for giving her the opportunity to work at the Beth El Early Childhood Center.
Ones Room Teachers
Bonnie was born and raised in Phoenix. She is 21 years old and is currently enrolled at Phoenix College to get her degree in elementary education.
Bonnie has been working at the Beth El Early Childhood Center for the past 3 years, previously in the Infant Room and now with the Ones.
I enjoy working with the children and working here has definitely helped me figure out my preferred career path.
Gladys Florian was born and raised in Guatemala. She graduated as an elementary school teacher and moved to Los Angeles 34 years ago. She married her husband Jorge and they have two boys, George and Michael. They moved to Phoenix 17 years ago and Gladys worked at the JCC Early Childhood Center for 14 years with the Ones/Toddler group. She is now doing the same at the Beth El Early Childhood Center. She enjoys being around children and watching them grow.
Toddler Room Teachers
Dvora moved to Arizona 20 years ago with her family from Israel. She has 3 children ages 23, 21 and 19. Dvora served in the Israeli army for two and a half years. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education from the David Yalin Teachers College in Jerusalem.
Dvora worked for 15 years in Israel, teaching autistic, special needs and hard of hearing children with learning disabilities. After moving to the US she worked at the Chanen preschool for 19 years before coming to the Beth El Early Childhood Center last year.
This is Diana’s first year working at the Beth El Early Childhood Center and she is the assistant teacher in the toddler room. Diana moved here from Los Angeles and joined our staff in the summer. She has earned a Bachelors Degree in Rehabilitation Services and has worked with children with developmental disabilities, autism and learning disabilities. Diana is excited to work with the children in order to assist their learning and developmental needs, but most of all to provide a safe and nurturing environment for their individual goals.
Twos Room Teachers
Chely Barrera moved to the US from a small, but beautiful country named Guatemala. She is a qualified elementary school teacher and, together with her husband Jorge, has 3 wonderful sons Jorge, Freddy and Roberto. The family has grown with the addition of her three daughters-in-law, Alma, Flor and Ariadna. Between them they have 9 children, five girls and 4 boys.
Chely has worked with and enjoyed the company of children for 30 years. She loves using her talents and love to teach the children. Her favorite hobbies are spending time with her family and reading a great book.
Threes Room Teachers
I was born in Glendale, Arizona. I have three grown children, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Spending time with them is one of my enjoyments. Hiking, walking, traveling, reading and going to school are a few more.
I studied Early Childhood Education at Glendale College and have taken many early childhood classes at the Paradise Valley Community College. I also volunteered with math and reading classes when my children were in school. Taking classes is very important to me and I am happy to be a lifelong learner. I don’t consider working with young children to be work because it is what I love!
Jane Nash has been teaching preschool for 16 years.
She graduated from Cal State Northridge with a BA in Early Childhood Education. She loves teaching and considers it a very rewarding job. Jane has worked at the Beth El Early Childhood Center for 2 years and says it’s a wonderful school with dedicated teachers.
Jane has 5 children and 2 dogs and she loves to swim and travel.
Pre-Kindergarten Class Teacher
Nora is a very familiar face at Beth El – she has been teaching at the Beth El Early Childhood Center since1989. For the past few years she has been teaching Pre-K.
She is a native of Argentina who has also lived in Israel and New York before coming to the Valley. In Israel she studied at Machon Greenberg and Jerusalem University. She actively pursues educational opportunities through NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) and CAJE (Coalition for Alternatives in Jewish Education). She acquired her AA degree in early childhood education at Phoenix College.
Nora is very interested in the Reggio Emilia and Writing Without Tears programs, both of which she brings into the classroom.
Nora is the mother of twin daughters and a son who attended our school. She also has a grandson whom she adores.
In her spare time, Nora likes to Zumba, garden organically, travel and look after her animals.
