1:00 PM - 4:30 PMBeth El Phoenix

Explore the settlement of a Jewish homeland with two 20th century propaganda films. After the screenings, please stay for group discussion.

The Land of Promise (Juda Leman, 1935)
One of the first sound films produced in [then] Palestine, this documentary-travelogue showcases the growing accomplishments of early Zionist settlers. Presenting Palestine as a place of opportunity for the Jewish people, the film was made to encourage settlement and investment in the land of Israel.

Seekers of Happiness (Vladimir Korsh & Iosif Shapiro, 1936)
This Soviet propaganda film was made to encourage immigration to Russia’s Jewish Autonomous Oblast. Through the melodramatic story of a family moving to Birobidzhan, the film presents a solution to the “Jewish Question” and a guideline for overcoming obstacles in the region.

Sponsored by The Greater Phoenix Jewish Film Festival. Films Made available by the National Center for Jewish Film.
