The Land of Promise (Juda Leman, 1935)
One of the first sound films produced in [then] Palestine, this documentary-travelogue showcases the growing accomplishments of early Zionist settlers. Presenting Palestine as a place of opportunity for the Jewish people, the film was made to encourage settlement and investment in the land of Israel.
Seekers of Happiness (Vladimir Korsh & Iosif Shapiro, 1936)
This Soviet propaganda film was made to encourage immigration to Russia’s Jewish Autonomous Oblast. Through the melodramatic story of a family moving to Birobidzhan, the film presents a solution to the “Jewish Question” and a guideline for overcoming obstacles in the region.
